Ancillary Equipment for Sewage and Drainage Systems

A sewage treatment system may have a number of ancillary components to the main treatment plant or tank.

Air Compressors

Air compressors are fitted in treatment plants and polishing units to insert air to circulate the media in the liquid.  This will speed up the breakdown of the waste.

A single compressor such as on the left is used in most installations but a large system may require a twin compressor as shown to the right.

 

 

 

For heavy duty use, IP44 splash proof, easy clean filters, strong robust construction and  low running costs we recommend the LDC60W Linear Diaphragm Compressor. 

Pumps

We also supply, and install if necessary, a variety of submersible pumps. Uses range from light dewatering and emptying pools and sumps through to continuouse duty applications in cellars, ponds and drainage systems.

Grease Traps

The illustration shows a grease trap and its components and workings. Grease traps are fitted as close as possible to the outlet from a kitchen where grease is present in the waste water, and filter out the warm liquid grease so that it does not later cool and solidify in the drainage system causing narrowing of the pipes and future blockages.  Grease traps must be regularly emptied.

 

 

Geoceptors

A geoceptor is a separator to remove oil and silt from rain water in car parks, roads and other hard-standing areas. The water containing sediment drains down into the tank at the bottom.  As the tank fills, the sponge prevents the silt and particles escaping when the excess water flows back out.  The sludge can then be removed from the geoceptor with a tanker.  Geoceptors are fitted with a wireless alarm which monitors their status, and can even be provided with a supplementary silt storage unit.

Well Water Rainwater Harvester UnitThe Well Water range of light industrial, commercial and domestic harvesting systems treats the rainwater from your roof area (up to 150m²) through a Micron Filter to DIN Standards. No particle larger than 0.28mm will enter the Well Water System. Over 90% of the rainwater is filtered and collected by the system.

The Well Water system has an integral overflow system fitted with a non return valve to prevent surging from the main drains, along with a water trap to stop smells and odour from overflow drains tainting the rainwater in the Water Well System.

The patented filter system can be installed either above or below ground as with all Well Water components the filter carries a guarantee.

In addition to the high performance Jung submersible pump the Well Water system incorporates the Easy Press controller. This will operate the pump immediately when the valve or tap in the pipe system is opened and stops the Jung Pump immediately when the valve or tap is closed, or if the pump runs dry. The controller can operate up to 15m away from the Jung Pump.

No programming is required for the Easy Press controller. The R1 is designed for above or below ground installation. The storage vessels for the Well Water Systems are manufactured from either HDPE (high density polyethylene) or Resin Transfer Moulded Glass & Resin.

The R2 Well Water System is designed to supply internal appliances as well as the outdoor uses. Rainwater can be used for toilet flushing and washing machines.

The R2 system incorporates vortex filters solenoids and pump control units as well as the many design features mentioned above for the R1 Well Water System. The R2 can harvest rainwater from larger roof areas greater than 150m². The R2 system is designed for below ground installation.

Marsh Industries

A unit from one of the Marsh UNI ENsign standard range of sewage treatment plants is likely to suit most domestic and small commercial requirements. Available for 6 to 8, 10, 12, 15, 20 and 25 persons usage and upwards, the plants offer various combinations of invert levels and gravity or pumped outlets.

marsh industries sewage treatment plantMarsh Industries sewage treatment plants have been tested for pH levels, a test that is included in BS EN 12566-3 the new standard for sewage treatment plants. A version of the UNI ENsign is also available for use in areas with a particularly high water table including a built-in effluent pump if required. With a 25 year internal and external structual warranty, these units  will give you a long term solution for treatment of your sewage. The Marsh ENsign also benefits from very few moving components plus there is very little servicing to be carried out.  This has the significant benefit of helping to reduce long term running costs of sewage treatment plants.

The Marsh ENsign is also on the Enviroment Agency's certified products list.  This means the plant can qualify to register for exemption from a permit to discharge.  This speeds up the process of having to wait, sometimes up to 4 months, for Environment Agency Approval - the E.A. aim to give an exemption certificate within 15 working days.

European Standard EN12566-03

The UK is changing its standard for sewage treatment plants. The new standard will embrace all of the E.U. The new standard will be EN12566-03.

What does this mean? Simply, only products that have been type tested and approved to the new European standard will be available to sell in the UK and other E.U. states.

Products can only carry the CE mark if they fully meet the EN12566-03 standard. Therefore, ensure that any sewage plant you are considering is CE marked to EN12566-03.

Permissions Required for Sewage Treatment Plants

permits to dischargeBy the 1st January, 2012, ALL discharges from septic tanks and sewage treatment plants will have to be registered with the Environment Agency.  This applies to both new and existing systems, no matter how old they are.

Until recently, anyone who had a sewage treatment plant or septic tank that discharged either to the ground or a watercourse, needed to have a Consent to Discharge from the Environment Agency.

These rules changed on the 6th April 2010. The Consent to Discharge has been replaced by a Permit to Discharge under the Environmental Permitting Programme Second Phase.

However, as all sewage treatment plants now for sale must have been tested and hold the EN 12566-03 Certificate, an Exemption scheme has been introduced, as these plants should not pose a pollution problem if properly used and maintained. You can now register for an exemption online or via a form from a Permit to Discharge for:

  1. Sewage Treatment Plants discharging up to 5m3 per day or less into surface water (27 population equivalent)
  2. Septic Tanks / Sewage Treatment Plants discharging up to 2m3 per day or less into groundwater (11 population equivalent)

Please note that for approved treatment plants, such as those we recommend from Marsh Industries, there is no fee for the registration of an exemption.
